La religión de Cristo; la fe que Él ha inspirado; las enseñanzas y las prácticas morales inculcadas por esta fe; el espíritu de justicia, caridad, de la obediencia a ley, pureza de moralejas, y santidad de la vida doméstica que caracterizan las maneras de aquellos que se adhieren a esta fe; y el carácter consiguiente de la civilización que es conocida como el cristiano y que influye hasta en aquellos que nunca han creído en Cristo o quiénes han perdido aquella fe. Las instituciones de piedad, de cada forma del alivio sociológico, de la educación, y hasta de la religión, aunque ellos no profesen la creencia en Cristo o inculquen prácticas cristianas, todavía se sientan obligados a seguir e imitar la benevolencia, la aclaración, y hasta cierto punto hasta la adoración y ceremonioso, a que todas tales instituciones deben remontar su origen. The institutions of mercy, of every form of sociological relief, of education, and even of religion, though they do not profess belief in Christ or inculcate Christian practises, still feel constrained to continue and imitate the benevolence, the enlightenment, and to some extent even the worship and ceremonial, to which all such institutions must trace their origin. Christianity is the inspiration to which our art, architecture, painting, music, and literatures owe what is most beautiful and elevating in them.
