It became one of the most important centers of Celtic Christianity and culture; it is thought that the Book of Kells was written there. Iona was the mother-house of many monasteries in Britain and Ireland.

Early in the 13th century the old Celtic monastery was replaced by Benediktiner-Benedictine Klostermonasteries for men and for women; these were confiscated in 1561 by order of the Convention of Estates. The existing runs date from the 13th century and earlier, and are now the property of the Dukes of Argyll.
