Early in the 13th century the old Celtic monastery was replaced by BenedettinoBenedictine monasterimonasteries for men and for women; these were confiscated in 1561 by order of the Convention of Estates. The existing runs date from the 13th century and earlier, and are now the property of the Dukes of Argyll.
