Imperatore romano. Lui fu un figlio di Julius Constantius, il mezzofratello di Constantine il Grande. Lui ricevè una formazione professionale cristiana che fu modificata dal suo interesse per neo-Platonism e altra filosofia, soprattutto ellenica. In 355 lui fu presentato all'esercito come Caesar e lui sposò Helena, la sorella dell'Imperatore Constantius, che fu suo cugino, e fu mandato come governatore a Gaul. Là lui completamente mise in rotta l'Alamanni vicino a Strasburgo, la Francia. Lui esigette il riconoscimento più alto e, quando Constantius si rifiutò, avanzato a Illyricum. Constantius morì sulla strada di incontrarlo, in 361; Julian avanzò in trionfo a Constantinople, e immediatamente ordinò un ritorno ad adorazione pagana ed emise molti decreti contro cristiani. In 355 he was presented to the army as Caesar and he married Helena, sister of the Emperor Constantius, who was his cousin, and was sent as Governor to Gaul. There he completely routed the Alamanni near Strasbourg, France. He demanded higher recognition and, when Constantius refused, advanced to Illyricum. Constantius died on the way to meet him, in 361; Julian advanced in triumph to Constantinople, and immediately ordered a return to pagan worship and issued many decrees against Christians. The dying words attributed to him are (of Christ): “Thou hast conquered, O Galilean.”
