O termo originalmente apelou a eremitas ou anacoretas mas de um primeiro período, por designação popular em vez de científica, um cenobite, ou membro de uma comunidade de homens que vivem à parte do mundo, abaixo dos votos de pobreza, castidade, e obediência, conforme a regra de uma determinada ordem. O monge de palavra raramente ocorre na língua oficial da igreja. Por uso freqüente do equivalente latino, monachi (singular: monachus), para descrever os irmãos no Governo de Saint Benedict, se eles viveram como eremitas ou na comunidade, ele veio para associar-se com aqueles corpos religiosos que até certo ponto reproduzem a velha regra beneditina, isto é, Cluniacs, monges cistercienses, Trapistas, ao contrário das ordens de frades mendicantes, “caixeiros regulares,” e as congregações religiosas dos homens. Outras ordens bem conhecidas de monges são os Cartuxos, Premonstratensians, e Camaldolese.
