Un principiante è quel che chi essendo stato regolarmente ammesso in un ordine religioso, e già confermato in vocazione più alta prima di un periodo certo di prova come un postulant, è preparato da una serie d'esercizi e prove della professione religiosa; questo periodo è conosciuto come il noviziato. L'istituzione di un tempo di giudizio per preparare il candidato religioso per la sua carriera futura è una molto antica risalendo a partire da almeno il 5o secolo.
