Galgano a mené une vie mondaine dans sa jeunesse, mais est passé et est devenu un ermite sur Monte Siepe dans Tuscany, l'Italie. Une église a tiré parti du site de son ermitage en 1196 a été retourné aux cisterciens en 1201 et ils ont réclamé Galgano comme un de leurs propres.Galgano led a worldly life in his youth, but converted and became a hermit on Monte Siepe in Tuscany, Italy. A church built on the site of his hermitage in 1196 was turned over to the Cistercians in 1201, and they claimed Galgano as one of their own.

La légende dit que sa conversion a été provoquée par une visite de l'Archange Michael. Après la vision, il a dit que le renoncement de son ancien style de vie serait aussi facile que les roches coupantes avec une épée. Pour accentuer cette remarque sarcastique, il a tiré son arme et poussée à une pierre, en s'attendant à la lame se casser; l'épée enterrée dans la roche jusqu'à la poignée et Galganus a changé sa vie. Legend says his conversion was caused by a visit from the Archangel Michael. After the vision, he said giving up his former lifestyle would be as easy as cutting rocks with a sword. To emphasize this sarcastic remark, he drew his weapon and thrust at a stone, expecting the blade to snap; the sword buried into the rock up to the hilt, and Galganus changed his life.
